Salt System Repair: Cell, Board, or Neither
A salt cell is a consumable part, so most salt system work ends in a replacement cell rather than a repair. A proper diagnostic is what tells you whether it is the cell, something else on the equipment pad, or nothing wrong with the system at all.
| What you are seeing | What is usually behind it | Repair or replace |
|---|---|---|
| A Check Cell or Inspect Cell warning | Calcium scale built up on the cell plates | Repair |
| Salt reads low right after you added salt | A scaled or ageing cell misreading the water | Repair |
| The system powers on but makes no chlorine | Cell plates worn out at the end of their service life | Replace cell |
| A no-flow message with the pump clearly running | A failed flow switch, or genuinely low flow upstream | Repair |
| A dead display, or no power at the unit | The control board, or the power center feeding it | Repair |
| Chlorine stays low with salt at the right level | Usually stabilizer or run time, not the salt system | Neither |
What a salt system repair usually involves
- Salt cell cleaning. Orange County water is hard, and calcium plates out onto the cell. Cleaning the scale off can buy a cell time, but it does not undo wear, and a cell that has done its hours still needs replacing.
- Salt cell replacement. This is where most salt system work ends up. Cells are rated in running hours rather than years, so a cell on a pool that runs long days wears out sooner than the box suggests. We diagnose first, then quote the cell your system actually takes.
- Flow switches. The part that tells the system water is moving. When it fails the unit refuses to make chlorine, which is the system protecting itself rather than breaking.
- Control boards and power centers. Worth repairing on a system that is otherwise sound, and worth questioning on one that is not.
- Unions and O-rings. The cell sits between two unions, and those are where a salt system usually starts to weep.
When it is not the salt system at all
- Salt level that is simply off. Too low and the cell cannot produce; too high and it corrodes hardware. Test it before you replace anything.
- Stabilizer that has washed out. Without cyanuric acid, sunlight burns off chlorine as fast as the cell makes it. The cell is working; the pool cannot hold what it produces.
- Cold water. Most cells slow down or stop below roughly 60 degrees. Through an Orange County winter that is normal behavior, not a fault.
- A dirty filter or a slow pump. Low flow trips the same no-flow protection a failed switch does. We check the rest of the pad before condemning a cell.
We service Jandy TruClear and AquaPure, Pentair IntelliChlor and Hayward AquaRite salt chlorinators, and we are an authorized Jandy warranty service center.
If the fault is not obviously the cell, a pool equipment diagnostic finds it. A salt system only works as well as the equipment pad around it. If flow is the real problem, start with pool filter repair or pool pump repair and installation — and pool equipment repair and installation shows how the whole system fits together.
Signs Your Salt System Needs Attention
Not every warning light means a full system replacement — here's how to tell what's actually wrong.
Signs You Likely Just Need a New Cell
- "Check Salt" or "Inspect Cell" light stays on even after confirming the salt level tests fine
- Chlorine output has dropped even though flow, filter, and salt level all check out
- Cell is 3-7 years old — the typical lifespan for a salt cell
- Visible scale buildup on the plates that doesn't clear with cleaning
Signs You Need the Whole System Replaced
- Control panel/power center display is dead or won't power on
- Panel won't communicate with the cell at all, even a new one
- Panel is old enough that matching parts are hard to find
- You want to upgrade to a newer, smarter system
What a Salt Water Pool Actually Gets You
A salt water pool is still a chlorine pool — the difference is that a salt chlorine generator makes the chlorine on site, from dissolved pool salt, instead of you pouring it in by hand.
Softer Water, Less of That Chlorine Smell
A salt pool runs at roughly a tenth of the salinity of sea water. Most Orange County homeowners tell us the water feels softer and the harsh chlorine smell and eye sting largely go away.
Steady Sanitizer, Not Peaks and Valleys
The cell generates chlorine continuously while the pump runs, so your sanitizer level stays far more stable than it does between manual doses — which is also easier on your finish and tile.
No Hauling or Storing Chlorine
No jugs of liquid chlorine or buckets of tabs in the garage. You add pool salt a few times a season and the salt chlorine generator handles the rest.
Lower Running Cost Over the Year
Pool salt costs a fraction of buying chlorine year-round. The trade-off is the salt cell itself, which is a wear part — plan on replacing it every few years depending on use and water chemistry.
The honest trade-offs. Salt systems are not maintenance-free. The cell needs cleaning when scale builds up, salinity has to stay in the range your unit calls for (commonly around 3,000–3,500 ppm), and salt can be hard on some natural stone coping and untreated metal if it is not rinsed off. We would rather tell you that before you buy than have it surprise you in year three — and if a salt water pool conversion is not the right call for your pool, we will say so.
What a Salt System Installation Involves
Done right, so your chlorine output is dialed in from day one — not guessed at.
- Salt level tested and verified before anything is installed
- New cell set in-line and the power center mounted and wired
- Output percentage programmed to match your pool's actual size and usage
- Full startup and chlorine-production test before we consider the job done
- Typically completed in a single day
Salt Systems, Diagnosed and Installed Right
ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy TruClear is what we install most often on new jobs. That said, most salt system calls are repairs on whatever's already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair IntelliChlor systems, Hayward AquaRite systems, and other major brands too.
Most salt system estimates are put together remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If you're not sure what's actually wrong, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a replacement.

Get a Free QuoteIf your control panel/power center is still functioning normally, replacing just the salt cell is usually all that's needed — that's the more common repair. The whole system, cell and panel together, only needs replacing if the panel itself has failed, won't communicate with a new cell, or is old enough that matching parts are hard to find. We diagnose which one applies before quoting, not after.
