Repair or Replace?

Pool Pump Repair or Replacement: How to Tell

A pump problem isn't always a full replacement — here's how to tell the difference before you call.

Signs a Repair Might Be Enough

  • Pump won't prime — often an air leak, low water level, or worn lid O-ring, not a dead pump
  • Unusual noise, whining, or grinding while running
  • A minor leak around the seal or shaft
  • Breaker trips only occasionally, not every time
  • Weak flow that turns out to be a clogged basket or line, not the pump itself

Signs You Likely Need a New Pump

  • Motor hums and trips the breaker, or won't start at all
  • It's an older single-speed pump — California now requires variable speed for most replacements anyway
  • Cracked housing or a seal that keeps failing after repairs
  • Repeated repairs on the same 8-10+ year old unit
Scope

What a New Pool Pump Installation Involves

A clean swap, done right — not just dropping in a new pump and hoping the plumbing lines up.

  • Old pump removed and disconnected from the plumbing and electrical
  • New variable-speed pump set, plumbed, and wired to match your existing connections
  • Speed programmed to match your filter and any water features on the same circuit
  • Full startup and leak check before we consider the job done

When You Need a New Pool Pump, Not a Pool Pump Repair

Plenty of pump problems are a repair. Some are not, and the line between them is clearer than most people expect.

A pool pump repair makes sense when

  • The pump is under five years old. At that age the repairs tend to sit at the cheap end and the rest of the unit has life left in it.
  • It is a lid, O-ring, basket or union. Wear items, quick to do, and more often the whole problem than people assume.
  • A shaft seal caught early. Before water has reached the motor, this is well worth doing. After, it is not.
  • It will not prime. Usually air on the suction side rather than a fault in the pump at all.

A new pool pump is the better call when

  • It grinds or screeches. That is bearings, and bearings are not a standalone repair you patch onto a tired pump.
  • It hums without turning. Switch it off at the breaker. A stalled motor turns electricity into heat rather than motion, and the problem is inside the motor.
  • The housing is cracked. Nothing to repair back to reliable.
  • It is an old single-speed unit. A significant repair on one rarely makes sense, because a pool pump replacement today is a variable-speed pool pump either way.

What a new pool pump installation actually involves

A pool pump installation is a visit rather than a swap. The old unit comes out, the plumbing around it usually gets remade so the new pump sits square and the unions line up, the electrical is connected properly for a variable-speed pool pump, and the speeds get set and tested before we leave. That last part matters more than it sounds: a new pool pump set to the wrong overnight speed can sit below the flow a gas heater needs to stay lit, which is one of the most common false heater calls we take.

We install and repair Pentair including the IntelliFlo, WhisperFlo and SuperFlo, Hayward including the TriStar VS, EcoStar and Super Pump, Jandy including the VS FloPro, and Sta-Rite. Which brand suits you depends more on your plumbing and how you actually run the pool than on the badge.

Working out which one you need? We cover the symptoms one by one in pool pump humming, not priming, or just dead, the running-cost case in is a variable-speed pool pump worth it, and the real numbers in pool pump repair cost. If the heater is misbehaving too, start here: pool heater not working.

Variable-Speed Pool Pumps, Installed Right

ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and the Jandy VS FloPro and E-Pump are what we install most often on new jobs. That said, most pump calls are repairs on whatever's already in the ground — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair WhisperFlo, IntelliFlo and SuperFlo pumps, Hayward EcoStar and TriStar VS pumps, and other major brands too.

Most pump estimates are put together remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If you're not sure what's actually wrong, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a new pump.

Why We Recommend Jandy

We're an authorized Jandy warranty service center, so if a Jandy pump ever needs warranty work, we can handle it directly instead of routing you through a third party. Jandy also backs its variable-speed pumps with a 3-year manufacturer warranty — longer than the standard 1-year coverage on many single-speed pumps. It's not the only brand we trust; we repair Pentair, Hayward, and others just as often. It's the one we know best and can stand behind locally.

FAQ

Pool Pump Repair & Installation FAQ

Do you repair Pentair WhisperFlo and IntelliFlo pumps, or only Jandy?
ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and the Jandy VS FloPro and E-Pump are what we install most often on new jobs. That said, most pump calls are repairs on equipment already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair pumps like the WhisperFlo, IntelliFlo and SuperFlo, Hayward pumps like the Super Pump, EcoStar and TriStar VS, and other major brands too.
Why do I need a variable-speed pump instead of a single-speed pump?
California now requires a variable-speed pump for most residential pool pump replacements. They also run significantly quieter and use far less electricity than older single-speed pumps — many homeowners see the difference on their power bill within a year or two. Every pump we install is variable speed.
How much does a pool pump installation cost in Orange County?
A full pool pump replacement runs up to $2,600 for a variable-speed pool pump, including labor and installation. Most quotes can be put together remotely from a few photos.
What is the pool pump repair cost in Orange County?
Pool pump repair cost in Orange County depends on what's actually broken. A minor fix runs $195–$295, a seal replacement $350–$450, and a full variable-speed pump replacement runs up to $2,600 — there isn't one single number that means much without knowing the specific issue.
How long does a pool pump last?
A well-maintained pool pump typically lasts 8–15 years. If your pump is on the older end of that range and needing repeat repairs, replacement is usually the more cost-effective call — especially since a modern variable-speed pump will also lower your electric bill.
Can I replace my pool pump myself?
It's not a typical DIY job. A pump replacement means safely disconnecting electrical service, removing the old unit, and reconnecting plumbing and wiring correctly — mistakes here can be a safety hazard or void your equipment's warranty. Professional installation protects both.
Do I need someone to come out and look at my pump before you can quote it?
Usually not. Most pump estimates are done remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If the problem isn't obvious — it's not clear whether it's the pump, the motor, or something else — an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a new pump.
My pump won't turn on, or it hums and trips the breaker — does it need to be replaced?
Often, yes — a motor that hums and trips the breaker, or won't start at all, is usually a sign the motor has failed rather than something we can repair. An older single-speed pump showing these symptoms is typically past the point of a cost-effective repair.
Why is my pool pump leaking?
Most pump leaks come from a worn shaft seal, a damaged O-ring, or a cracked housing. A seal or O-ring is usually a straightforward repair; a cracked pump housing or a leak from the motor itself is more often a sign the pump is due for replacement. Send us a few photos and we can usually tell you which one you're dealing with.
How long does a pool pump installation take?
Most pump installations are completed in a single day.
