Pool Heater Repair or Replacement: How to Tell

Not every heater problem means a new unit — here's how to tell the difference.

Signs a Repair Might Be Enough

  • Pilot light won't stay lit, or ignition fails intermittently
  • Digital display shows a service code without a rollout/safety trip
  • Heats slower than it used to, but still reaches temperature
  • Unit is under 8 years old and otherwise in good shape

Signs You Likely Need a New Pool Heater

  • Repeatedly trips its safety switch — often a worn, rusted, or cracked heat exchanger
  • Won't heat at all despite the pilot and ignition working fine
  • Visible rust or corrosion on the cabinet or heat exchanger
  • An older gas unit at 8-12+ years, needing repeat repairs
Scope

What a Pool Heater Installation Involves

A clean swap that accounts for your existing gas line, venting, and electrical — not just a box dropped on the pad.

  • Old heater removed and disconnected from gas, plumbing, and electrical
  • New heater set, connected to your existing gas line, and vented correctly
  • Plumbed in-line with the pump and filter, and wired to the equipment pad
  • Full startup, ignition test, and temperature check before we consider the job done

Gas Heaters & Heat Pumps, Installed Right

ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy JXi/JXiQ is what we install most often on new jobs. That said, most heater calls are repairs on whatever's already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair MasterTemp heaters, Hayward H-Series heaters and Raypak heaters, which we see most often on commercial pools, and other major gas heater brands too. We also install heat pumps for pools where lower monthly running cost matters more than fast heat-up time.

Most heater estimates are put together remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If you're not sure what's actually wrong, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a new heater.

Gas Heater or Heat Pump?

A gas heater heats a pool fast — a few hours, regardless of the weather — which makes it the better fit if you want the pool ready on short notice. A heat pump costs less to run month to month and typically lasts longer, but it heats more slowly and works best when it isn't too cold outside. We install and repair both, and can help you weigh which one actually fits how you use your pool.

Pool Heater Repair: What Fails, and What It Costs

Most of the heater calls we take end in a repair, not a replacement. Here are the real numbers, and the faults behind them.

What you needWhat it costsWhat that covers
DiagnosisFreeWe will tell you what the heater is doing and what it points to before anyone commits to anything.
Gas pool heater repair$350–$1,200Where you land depends on what failed, not on how old the heater is. Wear parts sit at the low end.
Pool heater replacement, installed$4,400–$5,600A full, professionally installed unit including the gas and electrical connections it needs.

What a pool heater repair usually involves

  • Ignitors and flame sensors. The most common repair, and the cheapest end of the range.
  • Pressure switches and high limits. Safety switches that stop the heater on purpose, and sometimes fail or drift.
  • Thermostats and water sensors. A heater reading the wrong temperature behaves confidently and is simply mistaken.
  • Chewed wiring. A heater cabinet is warm, dry and undisturbed, so rodents nest in them. We find it more often than people expect.
  • Control boards. Worth doing on a heater that is otherwise sound, and worth questioning on one that is not.

When it is not the heater at all

  • A dirty filter. Pressure climbs, flow drops, and the heater shuts the burner down to protect itself.
  • A pump running too slowly. A low overnight speed that filters beautifully can sit below the flow a heater needs to stay lit.
  • A valve left part-closed. Or a heater bypass someone set for summer and forgot about.
  • Scale in the heat exchanger. Orange County water is hard, and minerals narrow the tubes where nobody can see them. This is why heaters here fail younger than the brochure says.

If a heater was replaced and the new one behaves the same way within a season, the heater was almost certainly never the problem. That is exactly what a pool equipment diagnostic is for.

Trying to work out what yours is doing before you call? We have written it up in detail: what a pool heater that will not run is telling you, and code by code for the two brands we see most — Pentair MasterTemp error codes and Jandy JXi and LXi error codes. Real numbers for both paths are on our pool heater repair cost page.

New Pool Heater

Sizing a New Pool Heater, and Why It Matters More Than Brand

The most common mistake with a new pool heater is replacing like for like — putting back whatever was there before, without asking whether it was ever the right size. An undersized heater runs constantly and never quite gets there, and it is the fault we are called back to most.

What actually drives the sizeWhy it matters
Surface area, not gallonsA pool loses most of its heat off the surface, so a wide shallow pool needs more heater than a small deep one holding the same water.
How warm you actually want itHolding 85 degrees in January is a completely different job from taking the chill off in May, and it changes the answer.
Whether there is a spaA spa has to come up to temperature while you wait. Nothing pushes a new pool heater up in size faster than wanting the spa ready in under an hour.
Whether the pool gets coveredA cover changes the math more than any upgrade you can buy, because it stops the loss instead of replacing it.
The gas line feeding itThe one nobody checks. A line sized for the old heater will throttle a bigger new one, and the heater gets blamed for it.

What we check before quoting a new pool heater

  • The gas line and the meter. Before anything else. If the supply cannot feed the heater you want, that decides the size for you.
  • What the pump can actually flow. A heater needs a minimum flow to fire and stay lit, and a variable speed pump set low will not give it.
  • How you actually use the pool. Weekends only in summer and year-round swimming are two different heaters, and only one of them is worth paying for.
  • Where it has to sit. Clearances, venting and how far it is from the gas and the pad all shape what can go in without rebuilding the plumbing.

Mistakes that cost people a second heater

  • Matching the old model number. If the previous heater was undersized, copying it buys you the same disappointment with a newer warranty.
  • Buying the heater before anyone looks at the gas. The unit arrives, the line will not carry it, and the install stalls on something nobody priced.
  • Expecting a heat pump to behave like gas. Heat pumps are cheaper to run and far slower, and they fade as the nights get cold — which is exactly when people want them.
  • Replacing a heater that was never the fault. Hard water scale, a restricted filter or a slow pump will shut a brand-new heater down the same way they shut down the old one.

We install Pentair MasterTemp, Jandy JXi and Raypak heaters, and we are an authorized Jandy warranty service center.

Not sure yet whether you are looking at a repair or a new pool heater? Start with what a pool heater that will not run is telling you, or go code by code with Pentair MasterTemp error codes and Jandy JXi and LXi error codes. Real numbers for both paths are on our pool heater repair cost page, and if you are weighing the two technologies, heat pump versus gas covers the trade-off in full.

Heater repair (parts and labor, plus service call)$350–$1,200
Pool heater installation (gas or heat pump)$4,400–$5,600

Heater repair pricing depends on the situation — a pilot assembly or flame sensor fix runs toward the lower end, while heat exchanger or gas valve work runs higher. Pricing varies by brand, BTU size, and how complicated the gas, venting, or electrical connection is. All pricing includes labor. Generic online estimates you'll sometimes see lower often price the unit alone and leave out labor, gas line work, and startup — ask what's actually included before comparing.

FAQ

Pool Heater Installation & Repair FAQ

Do you repair Pentair MasterTemp and Hayward H-Series heaters, or only Jandy?
ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy JXi is what we install most often on new jobs. That said, most heater calls are repairs on equipment already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair heaters like the MasterTemp, Hayward heaters like the H-Series, Raypak heaters that are common on commercial pools, and other major brands too.
Should I get a gas heater or a heat pump for my pool?
A gas heater heats a pool fast — a few hours, regardless of outside temperature — which makes it the better fit if you want the pool ready on short notice. A heat pump costs less to run month to month and lasts longer, but it heats more slowly and works best when it's not too cold outside. We install both, and can help you weigh which one fits how you actually use your pool.
How much does pool heater installation cost in Orange County?
A pool heater installation typically runs $4,400–$5,600, including labor, depending on brand and BTU size. Most quotes can be put together remotely from a few photos of your existing setup.
How much does it cost to repair a pool heater instead of replacing it?
Heater repair, including the service call, typically runs $350–$1,200 depending on the situation — a pilot assembly or flame sensor fix runs toward the lower end, while heat exchanger or gas valve work runs higher.
Do I need someone to come out and look at my heater before you can quote it?
Usually not. Most heater estimates are done remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If the problem isn't obvious, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a new heater.
My heater won't heat, or the pilot won't stay lit — what's usually wrong?
This is one of the most common heater calls we get. It's often a blocked or corroded pilot assembly, a dirty flame sensor, or a gas supply issue — all things worth checking before assuming the heater is done for. Send us a few photos or a description of what you're seeing and we can usually point you in the right direction.
My heater keeps shutting off or tripping — is that serious?
It can be. A heater that repeatedly trips its safety switch is often a sign the heat exchanger is worn, rusted, or cracked internally — which usually points to replacement rather than repair, especially on an older unit.
How long does a pool heater last?
A gas pool heater typically lasts 8–12 years with regular maintenance. A heat pump generally lasts longer, often 15–20 years, since it doesn't rely on a gas-fired heat exchanger.
How long does a pool heater installation take?
Most heater installations are completed in a single day.
