Signs Your Pool Filter Needs Attention

High pressure or cloudy water doesn't always mean a new filter — here's how to tell.

Signs It Just Needs Cleaning

  • Pressure gauge reads noticeably higher than it did right after the last cleaning
  • Flow feels weaker at the returns than usual
  • Water looks slightly hazy but chemicals test fine
  • It's simply been a while since the last cartridge cleaning or backwash

Signs You Need a New Filter

  • Pressure stays high even right after a full cleaning or backwash
  • Water stays cloudy despite balanced chemicals and a clean filter
  • Cartridge pleats are torn, matted, or falling apart; tank or valve is cracked or leaking
  • Debris comes back into the pool after vacuuming, or DE powder blows back in after backwashing — a sign of a torn grid or cartridge
  • You want to switch to a lower-maintenance cartridge system
Scope

What a Filter Installation Involves

Matched to your pump's actual flow rate — not just swapped in and hoped for.

  • Old filter removed and disconnected from the plumbing
  • New filter sized and matched to your pump's flow rate, then plumbed in
  • Pressure gauge set to a clean baseline so future high-pressure readings actually mean something
  • Full startup and leak check before we consider the job done

Filters, Sized and Installed Right

ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy cartridge and DE filters are what we install most often on new jobs, along with Pentair FNS Plus and Quad DE filters where a DE setup is the better fit for the pool. That said, most filter calls are repairs on whatever's already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair Clean & Clear filters, Hayward SwimClear filters, and other major brands and filter types too.

Most filter estimates are put together remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If you're not sure what's actually wrong, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a replacement.

Cartridge or DE?

Cartridge filters are the sweet spot for most homeowners — no backwashing, low maintenance, mid-range filtration around 10-30 microns. DE filters produce the clearest water, capturing particles below 5 microns, but need more attention — backwashing and recharging with DE powder. Sand filters we install and repair too. They show up more often on commercial pools, and for a typical backyard pool we would usually steer you toward cartridge or DE — but a sand filter is a perfectly workable choice if that is what you want.

Pool Filter Repair

Pool Filter Repair, or a New Pool Filter?

Most pool filter faults are internals — a ripped DE grid or a torn cartridge — and those are a repair on a tank that is otherwise sound. A cracked tank, or a pool filter old enough that parts are getting scarce, is where a new pool filter becomes the honest answer.

What you are seeingWhat is usually behind itWhere it lands
Debris back in the pool after vacuumingA torn cartridge element, or a ripped DE gridRepair
DE powder coming through the returnsA split grid, or a cracked manifold holding themRepair
Pressure still high right after a cleanGrids or cartridges past saving — new internals, not a new tankRepair
A leak at the tank seamThe band clamp, or the tank O-ring under itRepair
Pressure that never moves, or reads zeroA dead pressure gauge, which quietly hides every other faultRepair
Water running to waste when you backwashA worn spider gasket in the multiport valveRepair
A cracked or bulging tankThe tank has failed under pressure and cannot be patchedNew filter
A filter old enough that parts are hard to sourceAge, rather than any single thing failingNew filter

What a pool filter repair usually involves

  • Ripped grids and torn cartridges. The internals do the actual filtering, and they are replaceable inside a tank that is still sound. This is the most common pool filter repair there is.
  • Cracked manifolds. The part DE grids seat into. When it splits it sends powder straight back to the pool, and it is replaced without touching the tank.
  • Band clamps and O-rings. The seam between the two halves of the tank, and the reason behind most pool filter leaks.
  • Pressure gauges. A small part that is easy to ignore, and every judgment about your pool filter depends on it reading correctly.
  • Multiport valves and spider gaskets. On a sand filter the gasket flattens with age and the valve starts passing water to waste even when you are not backwashing.

When a new pool filter is the right call

  • The tank itself is cracked or bulging. A pressure vessel that has started to fail does not get patched, and no internals will save it.
  • The filter is simply old. Once parts are getting hard to source, every future repair gets slower and more expensive than the one before it.
  • It was undersized from the start. An undersized tank clogs constantly. Nothing is broken; it was specified wrong, and a correctly sized pool filter installation is the fix.
  • You are replacing the pump anyway. Filter and pump are sized to each other, so doing both at once is the one time a new pool filter costs less in labor than it would on its own.

If you are not sure which part of the pad has actually failed, a pool equipment diagnostic settles it. Pool filters rarely fail on their own — a struggling filter and a struggling pump usually arrive together. If the pump is part of what you are chasing, start with why a pool pump stops working, or read up on pool pump repair and installation. For how the whole equipment pad fits together, see pool equipment repair and installation, and if your heater is short-cycling, a restricted pool filter is the first thing we check on a pool heater repair call.

FAQ

Pool Filter Repair & Installation FAQ

Do you only install Jandy filters, or do you also work on Pentair Clean & Clear and Hayward SwimClear?
ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy cartridge and DE filters are what we install most often on new jobs, along with Pentair FNS Plus and Quad DE filters where a DE setup is the better fit for the pool. That said, most filter calls are repairs on equipment already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair Clean & Clear filters, Hayward SwimClear filters, and other major brands and filter types too.
Cartridge or DE — which pool filter is best for my home?
Cartridge filters are the sweet spot for most homeowners — no backwashing, low maintenance, and mid-range filtration around 10-30 microns. DE filters produce the clearest water, capturing particles below 5 microns, but need more attention — backwashing and recharging with DE powder. We install and repair sand filters as well. They are more common on commercial pools than residential ones, and for most backyard pools we would point you toward a cartridge or DE filter instead - but if a sand filter is what you want, or what you already have, we handle it. Cartridge filters are what we install most often.
How much does pool filter installation cost in Orange County?
A pool filter installation typically runs $1,800–$2,500, including labor, depending on filter type and size. That's for a full filter replacement — cleaning or replacing a single cartridge element is a much smaller job, and pricing depends on your specific filter.
Do I need someone to come out and look at my filter before you can quote it?
Usually not. Most filter estimates are done remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If the problem isn't obvious, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a replacement.
My filter pressure is high, or my pool water looks cloudy — what's usually wrong?
High pressure almost always means the filter is dirty — a cartridge needs cleaning or the sand/DE needs backwashing. If pressure stays high after cleaning, or the water stays cloudy even with balanced chemicals, the filter media itself (cartridge, sand, or DE grids) is likely worn out and due for replacement.
How often should I clean or replace my filter cartridge?
Most cartridges get cleaned every few months and replaced every 1-2 years, though a heavily used pool may need replacement closer to every 6 months while a lightly used seasonal pool can stretch to 18-24 months. Rising pressure that doesn't drop after cleaning is the clearest sign it's time.
How long does a pool filter last?
A cartridge filter element typically lasts 2-4 years. Sand filter media lasts 3-7 years, and DE filter grids or glass media can last 7-15 years — the tank and hardware around any of them can last much longer if well maintained.
How long does a pool filter installation take?
Most filter installations are completed in a single day.
