Repair or Replace?

Signs Your Pool Equipment Needs Attention

Not every issue means a full replacement — here's how to tell which one your equipment actually needs.

Signs a Repair Might Be Enough

  • Pump is noisy, leaking from a seal, or trips the breaker occasionally
  • Heater lights but doesn't reach set temperature
  • Salt system reads low output but the cell is under 3–5 years old
  • Automation touchscreen glitches or drops wifi intermittently

Signs You Likely Need a Replacement

  • Pump motor won't start, hums and trips the breaker, or it's an older single-speed unit
  • Heat exchanger is cracked or corroded, or the heater is 10+ years old
  • Salt cell plates are visibly worn or scaled and won't calibrate even after cleaning
  • You want to bring an older equipment pad onto one wireless app

Equipment Repair & Installation Since 2014

ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy is what our crews install most often on new jobs. That said, most equipment calls are repairs on whatever is already installed — so we regularly work on Pentair, Hayward, and other major brands too. Brand isn't a barrier to getting service from us.

Have an older equipment pad without wifi or app control? We can often add wireless app connectivity to an existing system without replacing the whole panel.

Most of our estimates are put together remotely from a few clear photos, often the same day — no need to wait around for a truck. If you're not sure what's actually wrong, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with the installation. If you're also looking into resurfacing or a full remodel, see our Pool Resurfacing & Remodel hub.

Repair or Replace

What Gets Repaired, and What Becomes New Pool Equipment

Every piece of equipment on a pad has its own honest answer. Here is where each one usually lands, and the page that goes into detail. Not sure which part has failed? Start with a pool equipment diagnostic.

EquipmentUsually a repairWhen it becomes a new one
Pool pump repair Most pump calls are a repair rather than a replacement. A new pool pump is usually about moving to variable speed, not about failure.
Pool heater repair Ignitors, flame sensors, pressure switches and thermostats. A new pool heater once hard water has scaled the heat exchanger through.
Pool filter repair Ripped DE grids, torn cartridges, manifolds, clamps and gauges. A new pool filter once the tank is cracked, or old enough that parts are scarce.
Pool salt system repair Flow switches, control boards and the wiring around them. Cells are consumable, so a diagnostic usually ends in a replacement cell.
Pool automation repair Valve actuators, relays, transformers and wireless modules. A new panel when the system is old enough that parts are no longer made.
Pool light repair The fixture, the gasket and the connection back at the junction box. A new pool light is most often an upgrade to LED rather than a failure.

Common pool equipment problems we diagnose

  • Nothing comes on at all. Usually power before it is equipment — a breaker, a timer, or a panel that is not calling for anything.
  • The water will not clear. Filtration, circulation and chemistry all produce the same symptom, and only one of them is the actual cause.
  • Air in the system. Bubbles at the returns point to the suction side, which is upstream of almost everything people suspect first.
  • One thing fails and takes another with it. A restricted filter starves the heater, and a slow pump does the same thing, which is why we look at the whole pad.

Why we diagnose before quoting

  • The loudest symptom is rarely the fault. A heater that shuts down mid-cycle is often reporting a filter problem, not a heater problem.
  • Replacing the wrong thing is expensive twice. If new equipment behaves the same way within a season, it was never the equipment.
  • Age changes the answer. The same fault is worth repairing on a supported unit and worth questioning on one where parts are drying up.
  • Sequencing saves labor. If two things on the pad are near the end, doing them together costs less in labor than doing them a year apart.

FAQ

Pool Equipment FAQ

Do you only install Jandy equipment, or do you also repair Pentair and Hayward pumps?
ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy is what our crews install most often on new jobs. That said, most equipment calls are repairs on equipment already in the ground — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair pumps like the WhisperFlo and IntelliFlo, Hayward pumps, and other major brands too. Brand isn't a barrier to getting service from us.
Do I always need someone to come out for an estimate?
No — most of our estimates are done remotely from a few clear photos, often the same day. If you already know what's wrong (a pump that won't start, a heater that won't ignite), send photos and we'll usually be able to quote it without a visit. An on-site diagnostic visit is for when the problem isn't clear yet.
What does a diagnostic visit cost?
A diagnostic service call is $150. If you move forward with a new equipment installation, that $150 is credited toward the cost of the job.
Why do I need a variable-speed pump instead of a single-speed pump?
California now requires a variable-speed pump for most residential pool pump replacements, and they use significantly less electricity than older single-speed pumps — many homeowners see the difference reflected in their power bill within a year or two. All of our pump installations are variable speed.
How much does pool heater installation cost in Orange County?
A typical pool heater installation runs $4,400–$5,600, including labor, depending on the brand and BTU size your pool needs. Most quotes can be put together remotely from a few photos.
What's the difference between replacing a salt cell and replacing the whole salt system?
If your control panel/power center is still functioning, replacing just the salt cell is usually all that's needed. A cell-only or full system replacement typically runs $1,200–$2,600 depending on brand and pool size — the panel only needs replacing if it's failed too.
Can you add app control to my existing pool equipment without replacing it?
Often, yes. Most automation systems from the last decade can be upgraded with a wireless module for phone-app control, typically $1,700–$2,400 depending on brand, without replacing the entire equipment pad. A brand-new automation system runs $3,500–$4,995.
How long does pool equipment installation take?
Most single-equipment swaps — a pump, heater, filter, or salt cell — are completed in a single day. Automation installs and jobs involving multiple pieces of equipment at once can take 1–2 days.
