Signs Your Automation System Needs Attention

A connection problem isn't always a dead system — here's how to tell the difference.

Signs a Wireless Upgrade Might Be Enough

  • The app worked before but lost connection after a power outage or router change
  • The system runs and responds fine at the pad, just not from your phone remotely
  • You have an older system with no app control at all and want it added
  • Your router broadcasts 5GHz Wi-Fi and the system only supports 2.4GHz

Signs You Need a New System

  • The control panel itself won't power on or respond at all, even locally
  • Repeated full failures beyond just an app-connection issue
  • You want to bring pumps, heater, lights, and a salt system onto one modern touchscreen system
  • Panel is old enough that matching parts are hard to find

What an Automation Installation Involves

Done right, so your app actually works from day one — not just at the pad.

  • System or wireless module set and wired into your existing equipment pad
  • Connected to your home Wi-Fi on the correct band and paired with the app
  • Pump, heater, lights, and salt system (whichever apply) programmed into schedules
  • Tested from your actual phone before we leave, not just at the panel

App Won't Connect? Here's What's Usually Wrong

Most connection problems aren't a broken system. Common real causes: your router broadcasts 5GHz Wi-Fi and the system only supports 2.4GHz, the system lost its saved Wi-Fi credentials after a power outage or router swap, or a wireless antenna module near the pad needs to be power-cycled. We can usually narrow it down from a few photos before ever visiting.

Automation, Installed and Actually Working

ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy AquaLink and iAquaLink are what we install most often on new jobs. That said, most automation calls are repairs on whatever's already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair IntelliCenter systems, Hayward OmniLogic systems, and other major brands too. We still repair plenty of older Pentair EasyTouch systems as well.

Most automation estimates are put together remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If you're not sure what's actually wrong, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a repair or upgrade.

Pool Automation Repair: Usually One Part, Not the Panel

When automation stops behaving, the panel itself is rarely the thing that failed. Most pool automation repair work comes down to a single component on or around it.

What you are seeingWhat is usually behind itRepair or replace
A valve that no longer turnsA failed valve actuator — the small motor on top of the valveRepair
The heater or light works at the pad but not from the appA relay inside the load centerRepair
A dead panel with no display at allThe control board, or the transformer feeding itRepair
The app cannot find the systemThe wireless module or your network — often not the panelRepair
Schedules drifting or resetting themselvesA dead backup battery, or a board losing its memoryRepair
A panel old enough that parts are no longer madeNothing has failed, but nothing can be sourced eitherReplace

What a pool automation repair usually involves

  • Valve actuators. The most common automation failure we see. The actuator is a bolt-on part, so the valve underneath it usually stays exactly where it is.
  • Relays. The contacts that actually switch your pump, heater and lights. When one stops closing, that one piece of equipment goes dead from the app while working fine by hand.
  • Control boards and transformers. Worth repairing on a system still supported by its manufacturer, and worth questioning on one that is not.
  • Wireless and app modules. Often the cheapest fix of all, and the same part that brings app control to a panel that never had it.
  • Temperature sensors. A sensor reading wrong makes the whole system behave illogically, because the logic is working perfectly on bad information.

When it is not the automation at all

  • The equipment itself has failed. If the heater will not fire, automation is reporting the problem rather than causing it. Replacing a panel will not light a heater.
  • Your router, not your panel. A system that works at the keypad but not in the app is almost always a network problem, and a new panel would behave the same way.
  • A valve someone set to manual. Actuators have a manual override lever. Once it is flipped, the system commands the valve and the valve politely ignores it.
  • A tripped breaker at the subpanel. Worth checking before anything else, and it costs nothing to look.

We work on Jandy iAquaLink, Pentair IntelliCenter and EasyTouch, and Hayward OmniLogic systems.

Not sure whether the panel or the equipment is at fault? A pool equipment diagnostic tells you which. Automation only controls equipment that works, so a fault often starts somewhere else on the pad. If the equipment itself is the problem, see pool heater repair and installation, pool pump repair and installation, or pool salt system repair — and pool equipment repair and installation shows how it all ties together.

FAQ

Pool Automation FAQ

Do you only install Jandy AquaLink, or do you also work on Pentair IntelliCenter and Hayward OmniLogic?
ACE Pool Repair & Remodel is an authorized Jandy warranty service center, and Jandy AquaLink and iAquaLink are what we install most often on new jobs. That said, most automation calls are repairs on equipment already installed — so we regularly diagnose and repair Pentair IntelliCenter systems, Hayward OmniLogic systems, and other major brands too. We still repair plenty of older Pentair EasyTouch systems as well.
How much does a new pool automation system cost?
A new pool automation system typically runs $3,500–$4,995, including labor, depending on brand and how much equipment it needs to control. Most quotes can be put together remotely from a few photos of your existing equipment pad.
Can you add app control to my existing pool equipment without replacing it?
Often, yes. Most automation systems from the last decade can be upgraded with a wireless module for phone-app control, typically $1,700–$2,400 depending on brand, without replacing the entire equipment pad.
Do I need someone to come out and look at my automation system before you can quote it?
Usually not. Most automation estimates are done remotely from a few clear photos, often confirmed the same day. If the problem isn't obvious, an on-site diagnostic visit is $150, credited toward the job if you move forward with a repair or upgrade.
My pool app won't connect, or it says the system lost connection — what's usually wrong?
This is one of the most common automation calls we get. It's often a Wi-Fi band mismatch (many pool systems only work on 2.4GHz, not 5GHz), lost Wi-Fi credentials after a power outage or router change, or a wireless antenna module that needs to be power-cycled. We can often narrow it down remotely before ever visiting.
What are the actual benefits of pool automation?
The two biggest are energy savings and convenience. Automation coordinates your pump, heater, and lights so they run only when needed instead of on manual guesswork, which can meaningfully lower energy use. It also lets you check on and adjust your pool from your phone while you're away, instead of guessing whether you left the pump running.
Will a power outage affect my pool automation system?
It can. Some systems lose their saved Wi-Fi network credentials after a power outage or router replacement, which is why the app suddenly can't connect even though nothing physically broke. Re-entering the Wi-Fi settings usually resolves it.
How long does a pool automation installation take?
Most automation installs and upgrades are completed in a single day.
