The Project

What This Backyard Needed

A dated pool and spa with old blue tile and terracotta coping — ready for a real transformation, plus a brand-new Baja shelf.

This backyard's pool and raised spa in the City of Orange were still wearing their original blue tile and terracotta coping, and the finish had faded well past its best years. Rather than a simple resurface, the homeowners wanted a full pool remodel — a new shell profile with a Baja shelf for loungers, and materials with real personality throughout.

We handled the entire project as one coordinated job: a rebuilt shell to add the Baja shelf, custom-colored poured-in-place coping formed around every curve, real Angeles Courtyard paver decking in gray, copper & charcoal with charcoal edge pieces, new 6x6 Noble Cobalt waterline tile with an NPT Nordic Shores Cobalt glass trim accent, a full skimmer replacement, and a custom StoneScapes Tropics Blue mini pebble finish carried through both the pool and the spa.

FAQ

Orange Pool & Spa Remodel — Common Questions

What is a Baja shelf, and can one be added to an existing pool?
A Baja shelf (also called a tanning ledge) is a shallow, submerged platform built into the pool, usually 6–12 inches deep, made for lounge chairs to sit partially underwater. Yes — it can be added during a remodel like this one, where we rebuild the shell profile to include it rather than only resurfacing the existing shape.
What's the difference between poured-in-place coping and precast or travertine coping?
Poured-in-place coping is formed and cast in position around the pool shell, which lets it follow custom curves — like this Baja shelf and spa — more seamlessly than precut stone pieces, and it can be integrally colored to match the deck. Precast or natural stone coping (like travertine) comes in fixed-size pieces, which is often faster to install on straighter pool edges.
How much does adding a Baja shelf cost during a remodel?
It depends on the shell work involved — a Baja shelf adds shaping and plumbing beyond a standard resurface, which prices differently project to project. We give every homeowner a free, itemized estimate broken out by scope rather than a flat number.
How long after a pool remodel can you swim in the pool?
The construction itself usually runs one to two weeks. Once the new StoneScapes mini pebble finish goes on, the pool is filled right away and we handle the full start-up and water balancing — included in the job. Most homeowners are swimming within about four weeks, and the finish keeps curing for months after that, which is normal. Want to see more jobs like this one? Browse more real ACE pool remodels.

Thinking about adding something while the pool is already open? Baja steps, shallowing, a spa, waterfalls, deck jets and trim tile are all far easier during a remodel than after one. Read the pool upgrades guide →
