Pool Light Repair, or a New Pool Light?
A pool light that has stopped working is rarely a mystery. It is almost always one of a handful of things, and two of them are not the light at all. The split between a pool light repair and a new pool light comes down to one question: has water got past the gasket?
| What you are seeing | What is usually behind it | Where it lands |
|---|---|---|
| The light is out but the breaker is fine | A failed lamp, or water that has reached the fixture | Repair |
| The GFCI trips whenever the light is on | The fixture itself, far more often than the heater or pump | Repair |
| Low-voltage light dead, everything else fine | The transformer rather than the light | Repair |
| Condensation or water visible behind the lens | The gasket has failed and the seal is gone | New pool light |
| A cracked lens or a corroded housing | A sealed unit that was never meant to be reopened | New pool light |
| An old incandescent fixture that has failed | Age, and a lamp technology worth leaving behind | New pool light |
What we usually find on a pool light repair
- Water inside the fixture. The most common finding by a wide margin. Once the gasket has gone the lamp is finished, and the niche behind it needs checking too.
- A tripping GFCI. On a pool circuit this usually IS the light, which is worth saying because people blame the heater or the pump first.
- A failed transformer. On a 12V low-voltage system the transformer fails more often than the light does, and it is the cheaper fix.
- A seized screw or corroded ring. Ordinary with age, and the reason a light that could have been serviced sometimes cannot be opened without damage.
- Damaged cord, conduit or junction box. Less common and more involved - the one case where a pool light repair turns into real wet-location wiring work.
What a new pool light gets you
- Color was never an option before. A new pool light is usually a color-changing LED now, which is the upgrade most people are really buying when the old one fails.
- Power draw drops sharply. An old incandescent fixture pulls many times what a modern unit does for the same pool, which is why we rarely recommend repairing one.
- Do it while the pool is drained. If resurfacing is coming, a pool light installation then costs far less disruption, because nobody has to work in water.
- One niche, one decision. Whatever goes in has to suit the niche and the conduit already in the wall, so the fixture is chosen around the pool rather than off a shelf.
Every pool light installation we do is wet-location rated and bonded, white or color-changing, 120V or 12V low voltage to suit what is already in the wall.
A pool light is also the most common reason a GFCI keeps tripping on a pool circuit, which people usually blame on the heater first - we cover that in what a pool heater that will not run is telling you. If the pool is coming up for resurfacing, that is the moment to deal with the light. Everything else on the pad is on the pool equipment repair and installation page.
Pool Light Repair or Replacement: How to Tell
Not every dark light means an electrical problem — here's how to tell.
Signs a Simple Fix Might Work
- Color-changing light won't cycle through colors correctly after sitting unused for a while
- GFCI trips on a fairly new light fixture — usually a wiring or bonding issue, not the light itself
- Light is dimmer than it used to be but still functions normally
Signs You Need a New Light
- Light turns on then goes dark after a minute or two — usually a failed light engine or board
- Light won't turn on at all even after checking the breaker
- Breaker or GFCI trips every time the light is switched on — on an older fixture that usually means water has reached the wiring
- Fixture is old, foggy, or cracked, or water has gotten inside the lens
What a Pool Light Replacement Involves
Done to code, in a wet environment where that actually matters.
- Old fixture removed and the niche checked for damage or corrosion
- New light set, wired, and sealed correctly for a wet environment
- Matched to 120V or 12V low-voltage, whichever your existing wiring supports
- Tested for function and, on color-changing lights, cycled through every mode before we leave
- Typically completed in a single day

Get a Free QuoteWhite LED lights are simpler and more affordable, with fewer parts that can fail. Color-changing lights use a more complex internal light engine to cycle through colors and shows, which looks great but is also the more common failure point over time. Either is a real upgrade from an old incandescent pool light. On voltage: 12V low-voltage is generally considered safer near water, while 120V requires stricter code-compliant wiring — both are installed safely when done correctly.
