The Project

What This Backyard Needed

Worn plaster, a cracked concrete walkway, and equipment at the end of its life — on a pool with far more potential than it was showing.

This one was close to home — a Fullerton backyard just a few minutes from our own shop on East Imperial. The pool itself was sound, but everything around and inside it had aged out: the plaster was stained and blotchy, the waterline tile was dated, and the pool was ringed by a narrow band of cracked concrete that left almost nowhere to sit. Rather than resurface and leave the rest, the homeowners went with a full pool remodel.

We ran it as one continuous job. The old deck came out, the shell was stripped, and with everything open we replaced the skimmer and the underground plumbing lines and added an autofill to hold the water level on its own. Then the rebuild: Fujiwa TILIS 462 cobalt waterline tile with TNT 032 trim on the step edges, a StoneScapes Aqua White mini pebble finish, a Jandy FloPro variable-speed pump with a new cartridge filter, and Angeles Courtyard pavers in the Tuscan colorway laid over a deliberately enlarged footprint. FAQ

Fullerton Pool Remodel — Common Questions

What does a pool autofill do, and is it worth adding during a remodel?
A pool autofill is a small valve set into the deck or skimmer that tops the water back up on its own as evaporation drops the level, the same way a toilet tank refills. On this Fullerton job we added one while the deck was already open, which is the cheapest time to do it — the plumbing run is trivial when the pavers are up and the trenches are dug, and far more disruptive to retrofit later. Beyond convenience, holding a steady water line protects the pump from running dry and keeps the waterline tile from developing a scale ring.
Should the skimmer and plumbing lines be replaced during a pool remodel?
If the pool is already drained and the deck is coming up, yes — that is the moment it costs the least. On this project we replaced the skimmer and the underground plumbing lines while everything was open. A skimmer replacement normally means draining the pool and takes a day, up to three if the job is more difficult, so bundling it into a remodel avoids paying for that access twice. Full skimmer replacements also commonly include new suction lines, which is exactly the work we did here.
What is a variable-speed pool pump, and why does California require one?
A variable-speed pump can run at different motor speeds instead of only full blast, so it can filter at a low, quiet, efficient speed for most of the day and step up only when it needs to. California energy rules mean essentially every replacement pump we install is variable speed. On this Fullerton remodel we installed a Jandy FloPro variable-speed pump alongside a new cartridge filter.
What is the best type of pool plaster?
There is no single best finish, but there is a clear trade-off. Standard white plaster is the cheapest way to resurface and gives that classic bright, light-blue water, but it is the softest option and stains and mottles the most readily. Pebble finishes like the StoneScapes Aqua White used on this Fullerton pool mix natural stone into the cement, so the surface is harder, hides staining far better, and holds its color much longer. Quartz sits in between on both price and durability. For most Orange County homeowners resurfacing a pool they plan to keep, pebble is the better value even though it costs more up front. We break the options down in detail in our guide to pool plaster vs. pebble finishes.
How long does pool plaster last compared to a pebble finish?
Standard white plaster typically lasts about 7 to 10 years before it needs resurfacing. A pebble finish typically lasts 15 to 20 years or more, so roughly twice as long. Water chemistry is the single biggest factor either way — a pool that is kept balanced will outlast one that is not, regardless of finish. That gap is why we usually recommend pebble on a full remodel: if you are already paying for demo, drain and start-up, doubling the life of the surface for a modest increase in material cost is the easier decision.
Can you add more deck space during a pool remodel?
Yes, and a remodel is the natural time to do it. This Fullerton backyard is a good example — the original pool was ringed by a narrow strip of cracked concrete with very little usable space around it. Because the old deck was being demolished anyway, we regraded and extended the footprint before laying the new Angeles Courtyard pavers, which turned a tight walkway into a deck people can actually put furniture on.

Thinking about adding something while the pool is already open? Baja steps, shallowing, a spa, waterfalls, deck jets and trim tile are all far easier during a remodel than after one. Read the pool upgrades guide →
